1. Peter Harvey: “Avoiding Unintended Harm to the Environment and the Buddhist Ethic of Intention”
Abstract:
This paper reflects on how the mainly intention-based ethics of Buddhism relates to issues of causing unintended harm across a range of issues of relevance to environmental concern, such as species protection, resource depletion and climate change. Given our present knowledge, is environmental concern to be seen as morally obligatory for a Buddhist or only a voluntary positive action? Writers sometimes simply assume that Buddhist ethics are supportive of the full range of environmental concerns, but this needs to be critically argued. The paper reflects on a range of principles of traditional Buddhist ethics, both Therav?da and Mah?y?na, and concludes that, in the present world context, Buddhist considerations urge not only that we should not deliberately harm any living being, but that we should also look after the biosphere-home that we share with other beings, by using our knowledge of unintended effects of our actions to modify our behavior, and that we should act positively to benefit others beings, human and non-human, and enhance their supportive environment. The paper also considers issues such as Buddhism’s attitude to wild nature, industrialization and “progress.”

2. Peter Harvey: “‘Freedom of the Will’ in the Light of Therav?da Buddhist Teachings”
Abstract:
A well known issue in Western Philosophy is that of “freedom of the will”: whether, how and in what sense human beings have genuine freedom of action in the context of a broad range of external and internal conditioning factors. Any system of ethics also assumes that humans have, in some sense, a freedom to choose between different courses of action. Buddhist ethics is no different in this?but how is freedom of action to be made sense of in a system that sees human beings as an interacting cluster of conditioned and conditioning processes, with no substantial I-agent either within or beyond this cluster? This article explores this issue within Therav?da Buddhism, and concludes that the view of this tradition on the issue is a “compatibilist” middle way between seeing a person’s actions as completely rigidly determined, and seeing them as totally and unconditionally free, with a variety of factors acting to bring, and increase, the element of freedom that humans have. In a different way, if a person is wrongly seen as an essential, permanent Self, it is an “undetermined question” as to whether “a person’s acts of will are determined” or “a person’s acts of will are free.” If there is no essential person-entity, “it” can not be said to be either determined or free.

3. Chris Frakes: Do the Compassionate Flourish?: Overcoming Anguish and the Impulse towards Violence
Abstract:
In this paper I argue that in order for compassion to be considered a virtue, Western philosophical accounts of compassion must be supplemented by Buddhist understandings. After examining two potential problems with compassion (that it may burden the compassionate agent with anguish such that s/he cannot flourish and that feeling compassion may give rise to violence on behalf of the suffering), I consider a way out of both of these problems. My central claim is that the proper emotion which demonstrates the virtue of compassion is that of equanimity.

4. An?layo: What the Buddha Would Not Do, According to the B?hitika-sutta and its Madhyama-?gama Parallel
Abstract:
Given Shakespeare’s status as “the secular Bible,” it is surprising that his work has not been examined more closely to consider its spiritual teachings. As Buddhist studies increase in popularity in the West, more and more Buddhist scholars are being drawn to evaluate Shakespeare’s work in light of Buddhist traditions. Of special interest today is the perception of Shakespeare’s works as points-of-resistance to the dominant global-consumerist ideology. According to Stanley Wells, Lear’s “non-naturalistic interpretation of action” lends itself to the interpretation of its “moral and philosophical concepts.” This article considers the developing relationship between Shakespeare and Buddhism, and through a close read of King Lear establishes some of the methods and questions which may prove Shakespeare fertile ground for Buddhist scholars.

5. Michael M. Tophoff: The Ethics of Knowledge and Action in Postmodern Organizations
Abstract:
Good Corporate Governance was explicitly formulated in the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, which became federal law in 2002. It includes ethical guidelines to regulate employee behavior and the interrelations between organizations and their shareholders. While these guidelines are exterior to the person, this paper discusses the construct of an internal beacon for right managerial action, in the Buddhist sense, as well as ways not only to access it mentally but also to extend it into the outside world. Within this perspective, it also presents the ethical teaching of the Chinese Ming philosopher Wang Yangming (1472-1529). Although Wang is considered to be a Neo-Confucian philosopher, in this article he is considered a seminal thinker within the Chan Buddhist tradition Wang’s method of self-cultivation is presented to access the person’s innate knowledge which in itself implies right action.

6. Will Tuladhar-Douglas: Leaf Blowers and Antibiotics: a Buddhist Stance for Science and Technology
Abstract:
Sustainable technology, like mindfulness, requires cultivation. It is a process of constantly attending in the face of considerable distraction, a process that leads to a self-balancing wholesome state that has beneficial properties for both self and others. This brief essay begins with a consideration of science, scientism and technology. I will then use a handful of examples to consider how technologies appear to behave autonomously, often perverting the good intentions of their inventor or revealing unexpected opportunities for wholesome behavior. In many cases, it seems that apparently neutral technologies fit together with unwholesome tendencies, locking humans and machines into an accelerating and apparently unstoppable destructive dance. I will then propose a general strategy for engaging technologies which draws on traditional Buddhist practices, with two particular objectives: to gain insight into, and maintain awareness of, the actual bias of any particular technology, and to discover tactics for interrupting the destructive cycles which are the cause of the ecological crisis in our world.

7. David B. Gray: Compassionate Violence?: On the Ethical Implications of Tantric Buddhist Ritual
Abstract:
Buddhism is often presented as a non-violent religion that highlights the virtue of universal compassion. However, it does not unequivocally reject the use of violence, and leaves open the possibility that violence may be committed under special circumstances by spiritually realized beings. This paper examines several apologetic defenses for the presence of violent imagery and rituals in tantric Buddhist literature. It will demonstrate that several Buddhist commentators, in advancing the notion of ?compassionate violence,? also advanced an ethical double standard insofar as they defended these violent actions as justifiable when performed by Buddhists, but condemned them when performed by non-Buddhists.

Abstract: Drawing on the large corpus of Chola period Tamil inscriptions, this paper attempts to clarify the meaning of the apparently obscure and neglected term in Tamil epigraphy, known as veam. The paper argues that the term in Chola period sources should best be understood as a ?palace establishment? composed mostly of women (and sometimes men) of servile status. A relatively comprehensive review of the term in inscriptions and literature sheds significant light on the organization of the lower echelons of labour in the Chola royal household and the conditions under which men and women of this status were incorporated into such service. The paper argues for a reconsideration of the importance of the veam as an institution in Chola times, as well as the lives of its members, concluding with reflections on how the institution changed over time.

Das Programm-Paket kannte ich bislang noch nicht. Unter dem Namen ?Sente? verbirgt sich ein Literaturverwaltungsprogramm für MacOS X, welches sich in das Marktsegment von ?Endnote? hineindrängt. Vom Leistungsumfang (Sammeln der Titel durch Abfragen von Online-Datenbanken, zahlreiche Zitier- und Exportformate usw.) scheint es seinem Konkurrenten Paroli bieten zu wollen. Größter und wichtigster Unterschied ist auf den ersten Blick, daß ?Sente? ausschließlich für MacOS-Plattformen verfügbar ist (?Endnote? bedient bislang sowohl Windows- als auch Mac-Kunden). ?Sente? unterstützt von sich aus neben Word auch noch ?Pages ‘08? (Teil von Apples iWork) und ?Mellel? und erweist sich somit als echtes Produkt der Apple-Welt.

Die Leistungsanforderungen der jüngsten Version, die seit September 2007 auf dem Markt ist, sind recht anspruchsvoll:

Sente 5 requires Mac OS X, version 10.4 (Tiger) or higher, and will work on both Intel- and PowerPC-based Macs. The maximum reference library size on depends on many factors, including memory and the size of other applications running concurrently with Sente. We recommend a minimum of 1GB RAM for most users.

Pali Text Reader (Indologica)

Auf Sourceforge wird ein Open Source-Programm mit dem Namen “Pali Text Reader” angezeigt. Die Programm-Autoren beschreiben es so:
The Pali Text Reader software is a reader for Pali texts. It provides in depth search (both throughout the tipitaka or single files), a dictionary and an (machine based) automatic Pali - English translator. The Pali Text Reader comes along with a library, containg all Tipitaka books compressed in a zip archive. Thus, you can read, search and study the Buddhist Canon wherever you are - it comes in two flavors: an online edition (3MB) and an extended edition with all resources (Tipitaka) which is approximately 70MB in size.

Riven by Lust explores the tale of a man accused of causing the fundamental schism in early Indian Buddhism, but not before he has sex with his mother and kills his father. In tracing this Indian Buddhist Oedipal tale, Jonathan Silk follows it through texts in all of the major canonical languages of Buddhism, Sanskrit, Pali, Tibetan, Chinese, and Japanese, along the way noting parallels and contrasts with classical and medieval European stories such as the legend of the Oedipal Judas. Simultaneously, he investigates the psychological and anthropological understandings of the tale of mother-son incest in light of contemporary psychological and anthropological understandings of incest, with special attention to the question of why we consider it among the worst of crimes.
   In seeking to understand how the story worked in Indian texts and for Indian audiences-as well as how it might work for modern readers-this book has both horizontal and vertical dimensions, probing the place of the Oedipal in Indian culture, Buddhist and non-Buddhist, and simultaneously framing the Indian Oedipal within broader human concerns, thereby contributing to the study of the history of Buddhism, the transmission of narratives in the ancient world, and the fundamental nature of one aspect of human sexuality.
   Starting from a brief reference in a polemical treatise, Riven by Lust demonstrates that its authors borrowed and intentionally adapted a preexisting story of an Oedipal antihero. This recasting allowed them to calumniate their opponents in the strongest possible terms through the rhetoric of murder and incest. Silk draws on a wide variety of sources to demonstrate the range of thinking about incest in Indian Buddhist culture, thereby uncovering the strategies and working methods of the ancient polemicists. He argues that Indian Buddhists and Hindus, while occupying the same world for the most part, thought differently about fundamental issues such as incest, and hints at the consequent necessity of a reappraisal of our notions of the shape of the ancient cultural sphere they shared.

Nelle costruzioni passate la hindī moderna condivide con altre lingue indo-arie (es. pañjābī, marāṭhī, gujarātī) il tipo morfosintattico conosciuto come ergativo o assolutivo-ergativo. Se è vero però che gli studi focalizzati sulla possibile genesi dell'ergatività in indo-ario, concentrati quindi soprattutto sull'antico indo-ario e sul medio-indo-ario, sono molti, è altrettanto vero che i linguisti che si sono occupati dell'evoluzione dei sistemi assolutivo-ergativi a partire dall'ultima fase del medio-indo-ario, l'apabhraṃśa, fino alle lingue indo-arie moderne appaiono come figure isolate nel panorama linguistico.
   Il presente volume, adottando il quadro di riferimento tipologico-funzionale coniugato con l'analisi empirica circostanziata dei fenomeni sintattici legati all'espressione dell'ergatività, cerca di far luce sulle modalità attraverso le quali nella hindī si è giunti alla completa 'estensione' della posposizione per l'ergativo negli enunciati al passato. È così delineato il processo di diffusione e generalizzazione della marca di caso analitica ne originatosi soltanto a partire dal XVII secolo e strettamente correlato alle dinamiche di conservazione del sistema assolutivo-ergativo originario dell'indo-ario, dal quale sarebbe appunto derivato quello tuttora attestato in alcune lingue neo-indo-arie. I risultati conseguiti pongono bene in evidenza che nel corso di tale processo non sono intervenuti solamente criteri di natura morfosintattica, ma anche altri fattori, più precisamente di natura semantica e/o pragmatica, e verificano inoltre, in maniera critica, i parametri che nella tipologia funzionale sono stati utilizzati per definire l'ergatività sulla base di altre tradizioni linguistiche. Bodhisattvas of the Forest delves into the socioreligious milieu of the authors, editors, and propagators of the Rāṣṭrapālaparipṛcchā-sūtra (Questions of Rāṣṭrapāla), a Buddhist text circulating in India during the first half of the first millennium C.E. In this meticulously researched study, Daniel Boucher first reflects upon the problems that plague historians of Mahāyāna Buddhism, whose previous efforts to comprehend the tradition have often ignored the social dynamics that motivated some of the innovations of this new literature. Following that is a careful analysis of several motifs found in the Indian text and an examination of the value of the earliest Chinese translation for charting the sutra's evolution.
   The first part of the study looks at the relationship between the bodily glorification of the Buddha and the ascetic career—spanning thousands of lifetimes—that produced it within the socioeconomic world of early medieval Buddhist monasticism. The authors of the Rāṣṭrapāla sharply criticize their monastic contemporaries for rejecting the rigorous lifestyle of the first Buddhist communities, an ideal that, for the sūtra's authors, self-consciously imitates the disciplines and sacrifices of the Buddha's own bodhisattva career, the very career that led to his acquisition of bodily perfection. Thus, Boucher reveals the ways in which the authors of the Rāṣṭrapāla authors co-opted this topos concerning the bodily perfection of the Buddha from the Mainstream tradition to subvert their co-religionists whose behavior they regarded as representing a degenerate version of that tradition.
   In Part 2 Boucher focuses on the third-century Chinese translation of the sūtra attributed to Dharmaraksa and traces the changes in the translation to the late tenth century. The significance of this translation, Boucher explains, is to be found in the ways it differs from all other witnesses. These differences, which are significant, almost certainly reveal an earlier shape of the sūtra before later editors were inspired to alter dramatically the text's tone and rhetoric. The early Chinese translations, though invaluable in revealing developments in the Indian milieu that led to changes in the text, present particular challenges to the interpreter. It takes an understanding of not only their abstruse idiom, but also the process by which they were rendered from an undetermined Indian language into a Chinese cultural product. One of the signal contributions of this study is Boucher's skill at identifying the traces left by the process and ability to uncover clues about the nature of the source text as well as the world of the principal recipients.
   Bodhisattvas of the Forest concludes with an annotated translation of the Rāṣṭrapālaparipṛcchā-sūtra based on a new reading of its earliest extant Sanskrit manuscript. The translation takes note of important variants in Chinese and Tibetan versions to correct the many corruptions of the Sanskrit manuscript. [Verlagsinformation]

Herausgeber und Übersetzer
Indianiste, védisant, grammairien et philologue, MICHEL ANGOT a travaillé en Inde et a appris auprès d'érudits (pandits) la récitation du Veda et la grammaire traditionnelle. Il a enseigné le sanskrit et la littérature sanskrite à l'Université de Nanterre (Paris X) puis à l'Inalco. Membre du Centre d'Études de l'Inde et de l'Asie du Sud (CEIAS), il anime un séminaire sur la notion de délivrance dans les philosophies brahmaniques et bouddhistes à l'EHESS.Outre de nombreux articles, il a publié L'Inde Classique (Les Belles Lettres 2001) et La Taittirîya-Upanishad avec le commentaire de Shamkara (2007). Jubiläum (Indologica)

Wir feiern hier ein Jubiläum: mit diesem Blogposting haben wir jetzt die magische Zahl von 1500 erreicht. Das bedeutet, wir haben von Januar 2004 bis September 2008, also in einem Zeitraum von vier Jahren und etwa 8 Monaten, eine entsprechende Anzahl von Monographien vorgestellt.

Ab sofort wollen wir einige Änderungen vornehmen. Die einschneidendste besteht darin, daß wir mit dem Weblog auf unsere Heimatseite umziehen. Mit anderen Worten: indologica.blogg.de wird nicht mehr weitergeführt. Statt dessen finden sich Ankündigungen und Vorstellungen von Neuerscheinungen künfig unter folgender Adresse:
