The Ninja - Spy and Assassin (Radio Nostalgia Network ×)

Ninja's, often thought of as the world's first special forces, were prominent throughout Japanese warfare in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries. Centered mainly in the Iga and Koga province, ninjas trained under the supervision of the shonin (village leader). In order to enter a home, a ninja used foldable saws (to break down doors), handclaws (to climb walls), flotation shoes (to walk across a moat), and disguises (usually as a yamabushi monk or a zen monk). Contrary to popular opinion, ninjas did not always dress in black.Once inside the home, the ninja used many techniques to move and listen secretly. They used irogome (colored rice) to leave messages for future ninjas or some other ally. To listen in on a conversation, ninjas used a small tube that could be used to listen through walls. Then, to retreat, the ninja used smoke "grenades" and flash "grenades". As for the assassin aspect of ninjas, their main weapon was a short sword with shuriken (throwing stars) hidden in the hilt. Other weapons include makibashi (caltrops filled with poison), a traditional bow, and a shinobi-gama (a sickle with a chain attached). There were some female ninjas, although they were used less frequently. For more information, readMilitary History Magazine (March 2006): Intrigue (Ninjas) and

The Clock - 2 Episodes From 1947 - Boxcars711 OTR Day36 (Radio Nostalgia Network ×)

The Clock - 2 Episodes From 1947
The Clock was a dramatic thirty-minute suspense and mystery series. It was written by Lawrence Klee and was first broadcast in November 1946. The story always began the same; âSunrise and sunset, promise and fulfilment, birth and death â the whole drama of life is written in the sands of timeâ. Imported from Austrailia it ran from 1946 until 1948. Stories as told by Father Time. Sort of like Twilight Zone for the radio.

Sonic Society: Descent Into Hell Pt.1 (Radio Nostalgia Network ×)

Episode 31 Aired: 4/4/06The Sonic SocietyThe series "AfterHell" arrived in my mail and once again I feel like a kid waking up on Christmas morning- or perhaps in this case Hallowe'en Morn. The episode "Dark Descent" has everything in it I love about good audio cinema. A strong narrative, powerful actors, great music, and attention to one of the most important details- an understanding of the medium. I've spoken before about the brilliance of the very first known radio drama that explored the millieu through a tale of miners sealed off in the darkness. To tell a really good radio drama, you can't simply do a movie without pictures. The best audio stories use sound as a plot device. When you're left in darkness in a mining shaft, sound is your world. When you spend most of your time on the telephone trying to elicit help, sound is your savior- or your damnation. The folks at Ollin Productions recognise this and use sound to drive their story forward. After our feature we'll have an interview with the good folks from Ollin Productions about the After Hell project, then finish up with a final set of Wasted Tape.Ollin ProductionsSpaceship RadioShrink Rap RadioDream Realm EnterprisesWasted Tape

Lyon (played by Wilms Herbert and Herb Butterfield) whose money-grubbing predilections inspired both admirers and critics to dub his firm "The Lyon's Den." Regan himself earned from his clients the nickname of "The Lyon's Eye," as he was the boss' number-one gumshoe, capable of handling the trickiest of assignments.

HistoryPodcast 56 - General George Patton (Radio Nostalgia Network ×)

George Smith Patton, Jr. was a leading U.S. Army general in World War II. In his 36-year Army career, he was an advocate of armored warfare and commanded major units of North Africa, Sicily, and the European Theater of Operations. Many have viewed Patton as a pure and ferocious warrior, known by the nickname "Old Blood and Guts", a name given to him after a reporter misquoted his statement that it takes blood and brains to win a war. But history has left the image of a brilliant military leader whose record was also marred by insubordination and some periods of apparent instability. He once said, "Lead me, follow me, or get the hell out of my way."

HistoryPodcast 55 - Wall Street (Radio Nostalgia Network ×)

Wall Street is the name of a narrow street in lower Manhattan running east from Broadway downhill to the East River. Considered to be the historical heart of the Financial District, it was the first permanent home of the New York Stock Exchange.  The phrase "Wall Street" is also used to refer to American financial markets and financial institutions as a whole. Interestingly, most New York financial firms are no longer headquartered on Wall Street, but elsewhere in lower or midtown Manhattan, Greenwich, Connecticut, or New Jersey. JPMorgan Chase, the last major holdout, sold its headquarters tower at 60 Wall Street to Deutsche Bank in November 2001.

Escape - 2 Episodes From 1943 - Boxcars711 OTR Day38 (Radio Nostalgia Network ×)

Suspense - 2 Episodes From 1943

Suspense was one of the premier programs of the Golden Age of Radio, and advertised itself as "radio's outstanding theater of thrills." It was heard in one form or another from 1942 through 1962. In the early phase, the program was hosted by "The Man in Black" (played by Joseph Kearns or Ted Osborne) and many episodes written or adapted by the prominent mystery author John Dickson Carr. Escape was a similar anthology thriller and suspense program. Both occasionally adapted the same stories, though Escape had lower budgets -- and thus, fewer sound effects and name actors.

Children of the Androphagi (Radio Nostalgia Network ×)

In the 1930's 52nd Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenue was home to the speakeasy. In the 2030's it's all about the breakdowns, where they mix biochem cocktails and spark the Ash of the Dead, sucking its acrid smoke through bone pipes. The big ticket is, of course, shooting distilled endorphins. Yes, they'd found the last fix, and it was inside the human body all along.

Broadway's My Beat - 2 Episodes From 1953 - Boxcars711 OTR Day40 (Radio Nostalgia Network ×)

Broadway's My Beat - 2 Episodes From 1953

"From Times Square to Columbus Circleâthe gaudiest, the most violentâthe lonesomest mile in the worldââ Author Jim Cox, in his invaluable OTR reference Radio Crime Fighters, describes a breed of detective series that became prevalent in the 1950s that âwitnessed a forbidding side of law enforcement in the harsh realities of an urban backdrop.â Jack Webbâs groundbreaking Dragnet is considered to have been at the forefront of this new type of cop show (followed later by The Line-Up and Twenty-First Precinct), but itâs interesting to note that the series Broadwayâs My Beat actually predated Dragnet by several months, debuting over CBS Radio February 27, 1949. Broadwayâs My Beat detailed the investigative exploits of plainclothes homicide detective Danny Clover of the N.Y.P.D.
