TSA Issues GA Security NPRM (AVwebFlash Current Issue)
First impressions of a massive proposed rule aimed at beefing up general aviation security are that parts of it will put an outsized burden on GA operators compared to the security benefit of those measures. "...our initial read of the NPRM concerns us in that some very burdensome requirements may not provide commensurate security benefits to an already safe and secure industry,” General Aviation Manufacturers Association President Pete Bunce said in a statement. National Business Aviation Association President Ed Bolen said his group also has concerns. "Based on an initial review, we expect to file substantial comments on the proposal," said Bolen. The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) is also reviewing the document as is AOPA.

Weight control... (VAF Forums - RV General Discussion/News)
I'm about to start a 6 project but am new to aluminium aircraft construction. Aside from the ongoing debate on priming or not, and watching the amount of gadetry installed, does anyone have any good advice on keeping weight down? Apart that is from going on a diet...
Thanks!
UV Smooth Prime - Quantity Needed (VAF Forums - RV General Discussion/News)
I'm starting the glass work on my -8a and have pretty much figured out my initial shopping list. However, I'm still undecided on how much UV Smooth Prime to order. That stuff costs big $$ - I want to ensure I have enough to do the job,but don't want to end up with a bunch of unused cans.
How much is adequate for application by a fiberglass newbie on a -8A?
Should I install Fuel Return Lines (VAF Forums - RV General Discussion/News)
I'm bulding my 7A wing now. Should I install fuel return lines? I've read the posts. I don't know what engine, or fuel pumps or fuel system I'm going to use yet. I'm always worried about adding un-necessary weight and complexity. So what is the general consensus about having fuel return lines? Your efforts replying are appreciated.
Sealing the firewall (VAF Forums - RV General Discussion/News)
Quick question for those that have done this before...I need to seal my firewall to remove the possibility of CO getting into the cabin. I bought some 3M fire stop caulk earlier today and was going to squeeze it along the seam inside the cabin, but I started wondering if this was the right thing to do.
Should I just put the caulk in the areas along the upper end of the firewall (along the top skin) that have the large relief grooves in it? Or should I put a solid bead around the entire firewall? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Polished finish or paint......... (VAF Forums - RV General Discussion/News)
Hello all.
Saw the front page bit with the polished rv. Looks great! Has anyone here got one that is polished? Or, has has both (polished and painted) I have only heard rumors that polished jobs are alot of work to maintain. Seems to me that if there is a decent clear coat that this could be a relatively easy thing to maintain.
What are your thoughts?
New Pepto Pink Cowl Fitting Questions...... (VAF Forums - RV General Discussion/News)
Those that have fitted the new Pepto Pink cowl, please offer some help.
The plans and the instructions are clearly very behind what is now being provided with the finish kits.
The new cowl does not have any molded in flange along the sides of the bottom cowl like the older ones did. This presents a problem as you have no idea where to start trimming it to fit the top.
The top edges along the sides and the inlets seem to be really close to the centerline of the crank out of the box so I do not think it would be wise to cut any off of the top side or inlets.
That leaves me with trying to fit the bottom to the top.
I went as far as getting the top rear edge trimmed to within 1/8" of where I will want it to fit to the firewall. I was then going to get the fronts fitted together before trying to fit the bottom.
This is where it all goes to pot.
Seems the bottom is molded thick top to bottom. In the past you had a flange molded in to give you an idea where to start trimming. Mine has no flange. Even the outside areas of the inlet are way to thick and extend well past the centerline of the crank opening.
I took a straigh edge and placed it into the molded in flange where the round parts overlap in the crank opening and extended that line out to the outside edges of the inlet openings on the bottom half. I have cut almost to this line and just angled the cut to leave the meat on the sides at this point. I do not want to cut too much off in this area yet.
It is my understanding that you want the bottom sides to overlap the top sides until you can get it fitted well enough to determine where to cut the sides of the bottom.
I cannot get this to happen right now due to the interfearances of the outboard edges of the inlet holes.

EAA Data Plate (VAF Forums - RV General Discussion/News)
My inspection is coming up this Friday (Oct 17th) and due to various issues, my EAA data plate will not be arriving until Tuesday or Wednesday. I really would like to get an idea of placement sooner. Does anyone have a EAA Dataplate they can post the dimensions? I'm guessing about 1"x3" or so, but I really can't remember. This is the one that came in the EAA Homebuilt Registration Kit.
Thanks Guys!

Do I need to plumb the wings? (VAF Forums - RV General Discussion/News)
Im ready to rivet the main ribs to the spars... I've got the fishing line across the holes pretty straight and even all the way down. Is that sufficient on a pre-punched kit? Or do I need to plumb the ends and stuff?? Just want to make sure I dont have any twist in the wing after I rivet the ribs... I've got everything cleco'd together and ready to go!
Copperstate Fly-in (VAF Forums - RV General Discussion/News)
I am flying down to the Copperstate Fly in from central MN and am looking for information on airports to stop at, things to see, aviation salvage/bone yards, neat airparks, etc along the way. Our flight path will be from MN toward CO toward AZ. I will be leaving the week of the 20th.
Anyone in the AZ area with an open invite on a place to stay or a place to camp, let me know!
Thanks, Butch
CAT, SCAT, CEET, SCEET (VAF Forums - RV General Discussion/News)
Hi all,
I am working on my FWF installation. I have read Aircraft Spruce's summary of the differences between the abolve flexible ducting. What I can't figure out is, what should I use for my heat muff to cabin duct, blast tubes, etc. So, is it a choice of black over red? I assume that the CEET and SCEET, which are two ply thick, is overkill for the short RV runs. So it comes down to CAT vs SCAT.
Thoughts?

Michael Wynn
