Surprise, Surprise: PSP is #1 in Japan again (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

There is really nothing left to say. We're no longer shocked that the PSP is once again champion. Perhaps, even all of you are getting tired of hearing how great things are over in Japan. So, we'll just use this picture to convey how much the Japanese love the PSP.

Week of June 23-29:
The PSP still holds tight even with a strong boost to DS sales. The PS3 looks like it's slowly going back to its regular numbers, and the PS2 is still amazingly outselling the Xbox 360.

Siren: Blood Curse priced and dated for Europe (PS3 Fanboy)

ThreeSpeech has the scoop on when we can expect Siren: Blood Curse to hit the European PSN Store, as well as how much we will be spending on this episodic horror. We're not sure what Sony's understanding of "episodic" is, but we were expecting something a little bit different to what's been described. Siren will be split into four chapters, each containing three episodes of the game, but the strange part is that all four chapters will be made available on the same day -- July 24th.

I guess we can't complain now that we know we won't have to wait in between episodes, but we can't help but wonder why they've bothered with splitting the game up at all. Why not just release it all as one? When the game releases you'll be able to pick up each chapter for £4.99 (no sign of a price in Euros, sorry!), with all four chapters bundled together for £19.99. Pro tip: Buy them all separately and you'll save 3p. That's three penny sweets!

Phantasy Star Portable demo details, DLC announced (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

As reported earlier, the Phantasy Star Portable demo will allow access to the Story Mode and Multi Mode, and even an option to import your saved data from the demo into the final game. Now there is more details concerning what is turning out to be a rather extensive demo; it will be 301 MB in size and can be obtained via the PlayStation Store or distributed through selected game stores. You will also be able to play all of the first chapter and five missions from the Multi Mode. The game's official website also reveals more information this week, with new characters, a TV spot and an announcement that is DLC planned. The demo will arrive on July 14th and the game will arrive on the 31st.

[Note: All dates are for Japan only. No US or European version has been announced at this time.]

PAIN 'Amusement Park' tidbits revealed; video on Monday (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

Nestled deep in the comments section of the official PAIN Blog, Producer Travis Williams has been busy responding to the community. There's plenty of back-and-forth banter, but there are also some hidden gems of info which we thought you might be interested in. PAIN's expansion pack, the Amusement Park, will be available this Summer for "less than $6.99" and a video of it in action will be shown on the official PlayStation Blog at some point tomorrow. A European release will happen simultaneously.

With regards to trophies, this will be included in the expansion pack and won't end there. Travis says that "new trophies for PAIN will come out as long as we continue to add content." Hopefully this is a common occurrence, with future game expansions for existing titles bringing more trophies. Could this mean more Super Stardust HD trophies are coming at some point in the future? Considering there's no Platinum trophy, we're guessing so.

Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 3 card details and release date (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

Though announced a while back, we now have a solid release date and details for Yu-Gi-Oh! GX Tag Force 3. Like the previous games in the series, this is a card battle game based on the anime spin-off Yu-Gi-Oh! GX. In this case, season 4 featuring characters like Jaden/Judai (and Haou Judai), Yubel, Trueman, Johan, and more. The new game will use the Official Card Game Master Rules while seasonal events and the mail system return from the original Tag Force game. It will also included any new Starter and Structure Decks that have released up until June 2008 in Japan, with a total of 3,500 obtainable cards.

For a highlight of cards revealed so far, take a look here. The official site from Konami is here. Shonen Jump scan is from GAForum. The game will be released September 25th in Japan. No word yet on whether this Tag Force game will make it to the US.

Worldwide PSP releases for the week of July 6 (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

Not much is going on this week. North America witnesses emptiness for the second week in a row, while Europe is lapping up all the games we got from the previous month.

NA Games:
EU Games:
Asian Games:
Japan is finally getting God of War: Chains of Olympus. Also, the sight of Nobunaga's Ambition there makes this blogger question when will Koei ever bring a real Ambition game to the States? Nobunaga's Ambition: Rise to Power on the PS2 doesn't count; it's essentially Kessen with slightly more micromanagement. Oh the questions we hardcore gamers ask sometimes ...

Worldwide PS3 releases for the week of July 6th (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

It's another catch-up week this week, as the US finally gets its hands on Civilization Revolution and Asia is given Dark Sector and Kane & Lynch (though probably wishes it wasn't.) Europe is barren this week and the only new release of the bunch probably won't appeal to many people, unless you really love your Olympics. Here's the full release list:

US Games
EU Games

No new releases

Asian Games
Release dates are constantly subject to change, so be sure to check with your local store for the official dates.

Woodward theme arrives on PC Store (PSP Fanboy)

Yeah, this is today's PC Store update post. Basically, there's nothing here but a single theme, entitled "Woodward." We have no idea what that could be referring to. Once the PC Store is updated, we'll be sure to take a look, but until then this is really all we can tell you. Hopefully it's something interesting, but let's be honest here - how much can one theme entertain us? We would've been happier with no store update at all. Perhaps we should be careful what we wish for ...

Two new camouflages available for MGS4 (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

We're not sure we'd class these new MGS4 camouflages "DLC" as such, but they're definitely appreciated. Mostly because they're free, but also because they actually add something interesting and quirky to the game. Two new camouflages for your OctoCamo are now available to grab from the "Extras" section of Metal Gear Solid 4's main menu. These are named "Laughing Camo" and "Raging Camo" -- no doubt "Crying Camo" and "Screaming Camo" will be coming at a later date.

These new camouflages look pretty cool when applied via in-game menu, covering Snake in large Japanese script, but the fun really happens when you approach an enemy whilst wearing them. Depending on which one you have currently donned, you will cause your opponents laughter or rage rating to increase, sometimes causing them to burst out into hysterics or rawr at the sky. The easiest way to see this is grab someone in a CQC hold for a little while and then let them go. We have no idea whether this works on bosses, but we'd love to find out. Consider this your 4th of July homework. Class dismissed.

[Thanks Brandon!]

Tired of sneaking alone? Check out the new MGO mode (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

Metal Gear Online got a server-side update today which added a new free gameplay mode. "Team Sneaking" pits one team, equipped with Stealth, against another team which is defending a target. Stealth'd players can be spotted, like in the single player game, and will then be visible until the caution meter goes down. We only tried it out a couple of times, but "Team Sneaking" games seem to go by quite quickly.

A new ruleset has also been added, which can be played in most of the game modes. The name of this ruleset, "Headshots Only," is pretty self explanatory. Any non-headshot kills suffer a points penalty, which makes the game that little bit more interesting. These additions are only the beginning -- no doubt we'll see more added before too long.

Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 announced (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

Surprise, surprise -- a Tales of the World: Radiant Mythology 2 has been announced in Japan. We were pleasantly surprised to see in this week's issue of Shonen Jump details on another Radiant Mythology game. Details are scarce at this point, but like the previous Tales of the World games, it is a crossover title with characters from different Tales games. The character count is reportedly over 50, more than double the less than 20 characters of the first game. Even the formerly exclusive Xbox 360 character Yuri Lowell from Tales of Vesperia is in it. Take a look at the other characters in the scan over at PSPHyper. The first Radiant Mythology title was released in the US, so we are hoping this sequel does the same. Stay tuned for more info!

Super Smash Bros. Rumble in the DS jungle (DS Fanboy)

Building your homebrew project off an already popular franchise has the danger of raising expectations too high for your low-budget production, as was the case with Super Mario Galaxies, a 2D shoot-em-up interpretation of Nintendo's grandiose 3D platformer. Though Super Smash Bros. Rumble has the potential to one day be a satisfactory portable alternative to Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it still has a long way to go!

So far, the demo includes only a solo mode, a few stages, and Mario as the lone playable character. Fuzzy, the game's 19-year-old programmer from Germany, seems to have a lot planned for the project, however, as he already has a WiFi button in place and waiting for online support.

Just a quick suggestion -- maybe choose another typeface for the top-screen logo on the menu screen? Though it's resident blogger David Hinkle's favorite typeface, Super Smash Bros. designer Masahiro Sakurai would never sully the series with Hobo.

Suikoden VI listed, then removed, as a PSP title (PSP Fanboy)

German news site GameFront recently posted an interesting story regarding the listing of Suikoden VI for the PSP on a retailer's website. The story has been roughly translated on the NeoGAF forums. The retailer was in Japan and the entry has been removed -- but the rumors live on. Is Konami hard at work on Suikoden VI and moving the series onto the PSP? Or was it a clerical error and should have read PS3? Either way, until Konami makes a statement, we'll have to wait and see if anything comes up at E3 or the Tokyo Game Show.

Street Fighter IV art features Ryu, Ken, Akuma and Gouken (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

Capcom's blog has posted some art from the earlier anime trailer -- it includes old favorites like Ryu, Ken, and Akuma (Gouki). Gouken is also shown here, described as the master of Ryu and Ken, and the older brother of Akuma, though we are not sure if it is a literal brother or something else. Finally, Capcom teases about animation that will feature Chun-Li around July 24th. Take a look at all the pictures here.

Special Edition Lite, stickers, and ... global issues? (DS Fanboy)

Filed under:

What better way to celebrate Independence Day than by putting the faces of governmental figures on a sticker? The real story behind the above isn't quite that hilarious, actually. Late last month at the G8 foreign ministers' meeting in Kyoto, this beautifully redone DS was spotted, alongside stickers bearing the faces of the ministers. All that's missing is a sticker on the DS, though frankly, that Lite is way too pretty to muck up with stickers.

We'd probably do it anyway, though, for the lulz.

Sony files trademark, gets XAM'D (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

The sharp eyes at Siliconera discovered a new trademark from Sony Computer Entertainment America. Entitled XAM'D: Lost Memories, this mystery title will unlikely be revealed at their E3 conference some time this year. Spencer has a few theories, many of them pointing to RPGs that haven't been localized in the States before. Could it be Rezel Cross? Coded Soul? Or Yuusha no Kuse ni Namaikida? It could be none of these. Only time will tell.

SOCOM: Confrontation trailer shows terrorists getting just desserts (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

Here's a new trailer for the PS3 exclusive SOCOM: Confrontation. What would you expect to see in this video? There are Navy SEALs, guns, and SEALs using said guns. Still -- the areas look huge and fantastic. Who doesn't love gunning down terrorists? It's just a selfish wish, but we'd like a more realistic cover system. The devs do realize that bullets would go right through a barrel and/or a wooden wagon, right? It makes for cover in the game, sure, but at least let such cover points get demolished easily. That said, we'll shut up and enjoy it for what it is: an action-packed trailer.

Princess Maker 4: Implicitly erotic parenting sim coming to DS (DS Fanboy)

Gainax's (Neon Genesis Evangelion) Princess Maker series seems harmless at first, a cute "life simulator" in which you raise an orphaned girl to womanhood. The dominant/submissive undertones in the games aren't obvious until you realize the absolute control you have over every aspect of your devoted ward's life.

You can train her in combat to have her fight at the Harvest Festival, put her on a diet so that she can wear fashionable outfits, or send her to work at a bar to raise her "Sinfulness" stat while lowering her "Morals."

Depending on your guidance, your daughter can grow up to be the queen, lead an army, or marry the butler. If you raise her wrong, however, as we assume many gamers will do intentionally, she could become the king's concubine, work as a sleazy barmaid, or even marry her adoptive father!

Originally released for PCs and the PSP in 2006, Princess Maker 4 is also coming to the DS with a Special Edition subtitle this September in Japan. Publisher Cyberfront has a few improvements and additions planned for the port -- three new endings, stat details moved to the bottom screen, and, of course, touchsceen support.

According to the official site, using your stylus, you can "pat your daughter's head, pinch her cheeks, and etc." Etc., indeed. Try out a very brief and somewhat NSFW demo after the post break!

Play Infinite Loop on your computer (PSP Fanboy)

Want to give the upcoming PSP game, Infinite Loop, a try? Well, you can on your computer through a brand new Flash demo. Watch out! The game is primarily a text adventure game ... in Japanese. Unlike you're proficient in nihongo, you probably won't get much benefit from the demo. Give it a try here. (Note: There is no load screen. You will simply wait a very long time for the demo to download.)

For something everyone can enjoy, you can also download the new Infinite Loop theme for your PSP. It features cute anime girls and ... well, bread. Download it here and install it on your PSP in the folder PSP/THEME.

Pink invades weekly Monster Hunter DLC (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

After last week's more serious affair, Capcom decided to give us a splash of color in the newest Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G DLC. Titled Famitsu Sakura Mai Season, players will take on a pink theme of three monsters: Baby Konga, Pink Rathian, and Yian Kut-ku. If victorious, the player will be granted a special ticket. A more difficult Challenge Quest 08 will involve dealing with "sub-species of Shogun Gizami, Furu Furu, and Diablos." We are thinking pink is the new black this week for Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G players.

PSP sells nearly 2 million in Japan so far for 2008 (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

In Japan, PSP is king. Or, at least is has been so for the majority of this year thus far. Ever since Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G hit stores back in late March, the PSP has dominated the Japanese hardware charts. As a result, the PSP has gone off to sell 1,964,461 units for the first six months of 2008 in Japan alone. That makes the PSP, so far, the most successful system in Japan in terms of volume sales.

Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G has gone to sell 2.3 million units in little over three months. That's quite amazing to say the least. With such successes across the Pacific, we can't help but take notice and reflect upon the current condition of PSP in North America. Where are we going? Hopefully, E3 will provide us all with some answers.

PSP may have helped police catch multiple murderer (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

The last story we posted on, it appeared a PSP lead to a violent crime. We now have a even more violent story coming out of London; however, this time the PSP might have helped catch the murderer. The Sun reports that two 23-year old French post-graduate students shown above, Laurent Bonomo and Gabriel Ferez, were "bound, gagged and stabbed to death" in an apartment in London on Sunday night. The police believe they were tortured for the PIN numbers to their ATM cards. Bonomo was stabbed 196 times and Ferez was stabbed 47 times.

Fortunately, the police did have clues. They "established that two Sony PSPs are missing and believe they were taken during the incident on Sunday when the two men were killed." They also released one of the PSP's serial numbers, SO1-0613169-C. Today, a 21-year old man has been arrested in connection with the murders. It is unclear whether the serial number released helped solve the crimes, but it is good to hear a culprit has been apprehended in these grisly murders.\

[Note: Due to the tabloid nature of the Sun, here is the BBC's take.]

PSP caused teen to shoot another teen (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

Down over in Jacksonville, Florida, two teenagers were arguing when one decided to shoot the other. This is already tragic enough, but the "center" of this shooting is a PSP. Zachary Robinson, 17, shot another teenager twice before fleeing the scene. Robinson was subsequently captured and is now charged with aggravated battery. Fortunately, even though there was an art fair being set up at the location, no one was hurt.

We love our PSPs, but these kids went way too far. Also, it wasn't specified who originally owned the PSP, but let's not try to shoot each other over one, okay kids?

Majesco bringing Away toward North America in January (DS Fanboy)

Filed under:

The latest issue of Electronic Gaming Monthly features a nice preview of Mistwalker's Away: Shuffle Dungeon, which also happens to contain a nice bit of news: the game is given a January 2009 release date for North America, with Majesco publishing. This is somewhat surprising since AQ Interactive, who is publishing in Japan, owns an American game publisher; in addition, dungeon crawling is pretty divergent from the kind of casual games Majesco generally publishes.

Not that we're complaining, of course. Away looks awfully clever, and we're just happy we'll get to play it. One warning: given the history of this game, we wouldn't get our hopes up for it to make January.

MGS4 soundtrack now available from European Konami store (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

Click for higher resolution
Lots of Euro news today, which is unsurprising, considering the entire North American continent is on holiday. Konami's European PR rep has contacted us to let us know that the Metal Gear Solid 4 soundtrack is now available for purchase on the Official Konami Store. Check out the gallery below for the front cover, back cover and a view of the innards (which can also be seen above). The soundtrack costs £9.99 or €12.95 and includes free shipping.

Unfortunately, while the cover art is very pretty, we're going to suggest that you don't go ahead and buy it. A quick glance at the track list shows only 16 tunes - a far cry short of the 47 on the two-disc Japanese soundtrack. In fact, this is just the Limited Edition soundtrack "taster" disc repackaged for sale separately. Bit sneaky, if you ask us. Pony up the extra cash and get the full soundtrack -- you won't be disappointed.

Lempel has 'robust' Home on schedule, movie downloads soon (PS3 Fanboy)

Eric Lempel said Home is still on schedule for a release this Fall. Let's start with that reassurance. When pointing out that Home will still be in a beta stage upon said release despite delays, Lempel replied with "the reason we've been delaying [Home] is so that we can deliver a high quality service that the users will enjoy. Even though it will be in beta, it will be a fair representation of what the service can be and its potential, so it won't be a 0.5 release, it will be a fully robust service."

Expect the movie download service to get implemented into Home somehow, even though it's getting released in the US this Summer. No word on other regions or TV and music content -- but Sony will "offer everything [consumers] expect from us and probably a little bit more." He declined to discuss the potential for the PS3 to transfer said movies onto the PSP, which usually means it's going to happen in a big announcement at some big game developer event. Whatever those are. No promises!

Kratos will not be in Soulcalibur IV (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

48:40. That's amount of time into yesterday's 1UP Yours podcast that reveals Kratos will not be in Soulcalibur IV. They have been playing the game on both Xbox 360 and PS3 (though Yoda is mentioned immediately after the Kratos comment, they do speak of Darth Vader later) and they do not see Kratos in it. Unless there is some last minute change, which is unlikely, Kratos will not be in the main game. Sorry kids! Let's all hope for something in the form of DLC then, shall we?

Hudson Soft thinks PS3 development costs are too high (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

In an interview with Yahoo Japan, Hudson Soft president Michihiro Ishizuka has cited high development costs and "associated risks of developing for the format" as reasons why they will not be making any full-fledged PS3 games. However, this doesn't come as too much of a surprise; Hudson Soft, publisher of classic franchises such as Bomberman and Adventure Island, has only developed two titles on Sony's gaming devices (both Bomberman titles on PSP) this generation.

Nevertheless, Ishizuka did called the PSN "attractive" as a means to deliver games. With original games coming out on Wiiware, does that mean we'll see some of these games ported over onto the PSN? Or will Wii and DS owners have all the fun?

Hong Kong students bring PSP to school, compete in exams (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

Next time your teacher tells you to put away your PSP in class, point them to this. In Hong Kong, a program called the "Mobile Learning Platform" takes advantage of various electronic devices (PSP included) and uses them to give students quizzes. According to the PlayStation HK site, "students can use mobile devices including PDA, mobile phones or mobile gaming devices to log in to the mobile learning platform and then test their own knowledge anytime and anywhere."

The program will be used for an "inter-school mobile quiz" contest to be held on July 8th. Eighteen schools will participate in a challenge that tests their knowledge of the Olympics, and other trivia. Sony Computer Entertainment Hong Kong is one of the sponsors.

Y'know, when we were kids in school, we wouldn't be able to use our Game Boys in class. But now, these students can use PSPs and win prizes. You guys have it so good.

Hayter discusses MGS film, Kojima creative differences (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

It seems that David Hayter really wants to pen the script to the Metal Gear Solid movie. He has been recently trying to get fans of the series behind his banner by asking them to email Sony and make it happen. Now, over at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, Hayter chats things up with 1Up, taking time to talk more about his vision for Solid Snake's cinema debut and even divulging about a bit of frustration with Hideo Kojima's over-the-top direction.

"Kojima and I have different styles," said Hayter. "But I've certainly learned things from him, especially about ambiguity and telling a story without giving all the answers." While he can appreciate Kojima's work, there are quite a lot of areas where Hayter just couldn't agree with what was going on with Snake. In particular, he refers to Snake's suicide tease in previous MGS4 trailers: "I didn't buy it at all." He believes that Snake, with all his years, shouldn't have to hesitate. "If he knows it's time, then it's time."

Another folly in his eyes was a fan favorite scene from MGS1. "It's a delicate thing to discuss love blooming on the battlefield with Otacon," he said. Another one was the alternate ending with Otacon: "It felt like it was written to be romantic. It was just humiliating." So what does Dave have in mind for MGS: The Movie? He'll obviously avoid doing any of the above nitpickings. With that in mind, it would be interesting to see where he would go with the film.

Gonk! New Dragon Ball DS screens arrive (DS Fanboy)

Courtesy of Famitsu, we're treated to new screens of Namco Bandai's Zelda-like Dragon Ball DS game, and they're GONK-heavy. It seems that every time Goku strikes an enemy, a GONK sound effect appears. Is that just one GONK per combo, or does each hit meet with its own GONK?

Dragon Ball DS has two GONKing combat modes: hand-to-hand, in which Goku can carry out five-hit combos and activate the Kamehameha wave by rubbing the screen with the stylus; and staff, in which Goku can manage multiple enemies with his magical extending staff. Both combat modes are controlled with the stylus.

Gameplay video shows first part of Silent Hill: Homecoming (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

Supposedly from an early beta version of Silent Hill: Homecoming on the PS3, this Russian gameplay video shows a playthrough of what appears to be the first chapter of the game. Gameplay-wise everything looks similar to what we have seen before, and the provider of the video assures us the narrator isn't saying anything we didn't know already. In terms of story, we'll refrain from saying much as small story elements are disclosed in the 13+ minute video, but it involves the protagonist Alex returning home and running into some old family and friends. Look for Silent Hill: Homecoming when it arrives September of this year.

Gainax porting Princess Maker 5 to the PSP this fall (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

Gainax, an anime studio best known for the anime Neo Genesis Evangelion, is going to be publishing something wholly different this fall on the PSP. Princess Maker 5, which was released on the PS2 in Japan last year, will be getting a port to the PSP. In all the Princess Maker games, you play as a man who adopts a daughter that you must raise. In this current incarnation the player raises a girl of royal heritage who is a candidate to become princess. He protects her after the other candidates for princess are killed and she is the next apparent target. The fifth game in the series will feature a modern setting, as opposed to a period setting in past games. For the first time you may also play as a mother to the girl. The game will be released on September 25th in Japan.

Friday Video: Alternate history (DS Fanboy)

Filed under:

This week, everybody freaked out (justifiably) about a port of a thirteen-year-old game. Since we can't manage to think about anything else, we thought we would all sit back together for some Chrono Trigger content today, and celebrate our independence from having to keep another system hooked up.

This animated scene was added to the last enhanced port of Chrono Trigger, made for the PlayStation. Square Enix doesn't seem to have a problem putting FMV on the DS, so we'll probably see it in the new version as well. Hopefully the other new feature from that version -- interminable loading times -- won't also be implemented.

Go back in time to five minutes ago so your popcorn will be ready right now!

This is made up of 8 episodes, including four live performances from two Parisian bands. Here's the full release list:

Electrifying Elebits screens (DS Fanboy)

Filed under:

If you haven't had a peek at Elebits: The Adventures of Kai & Zero, then poke your nose into our gallery and have a look around. Instead of motion-controlled hunting and grabbing, the sequel to the Wii game is taking a much more traditional approach. While we weren't terribly surprised by the shift to a top-down action/RPG style, we're still happy to report that it looks pretty cute, if not quite as original as the first game.

We'll likely see a lot more of Kai and Zero during E3.

Looks like EA is going to continue its theme of dismemberment for the boxart of Dead Space. There is indeed something rather simplistic and beautiful about the boxart though, despite the fact that it consists of a floating body part beckoning unsuspecting space travelers into a deathtrap. There are also 13 new screenshots and concept art, most of them every bit as appetizing as the cover. Not exactly kid's stuff, but horror fans should be in for a treat when Dead Space, whose lead platform is currently the PS3, arrives three days before Halloween on October 28th.

Diablo 3 now a 'theoretical possibility' on consoles (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

Despite a previous straight-out denial about Diablo 3 being on consoles, semi-contradictory reports have been leaking out in the press stating otherwise. A couple of days ago Blizzard COO Paul Sams told the Guardian he "do(esn't) know yet." He goes on to say it depends on whether "console owners would allow PC players to play against console gamers" and if "gameplay experience will be the same on console, especially regarding the controls." Blizzard wants everything to be perfect, and that "developing for multiple platforms you sometimes have to compromise. We aren't willing to compromise."

Yesterday, Eurogamer's interview with Vice President of Game Design Rob Pardo has him admitting that a console version of Diablo 3 is "theoretically posssible" but some changes to the controls would have to be made. He conceded that the game is "of our major franchises, the one that's most console friendly, for sure," and that "Diablo would be the easiest game to translate. But it would still take a bit of work."

We honestly think this is a just PR speak for "no" to Diablo 3 on PS3, at least not at the same time as the PC and Mac versions. We wouldn't get our hopes up!

Delay: Shuffle Dungeon (DS Fanboy)

Away: Shuffle Dungeon has already been announced as a PAL release (and sort of announced as a North American release), even though the Japanese version of the game isn't out yet. AQ Interactive, Virgin PLAY, and (probably) Xseed should be able to give us firmer Western release dates for the dungeon crawler now, because the delayed Japanese game finally has its own date. Of course, that date is even later than the vague "summer" named in the last delay statement.

AQ Interactive announced the final (probably) release date for Japan yesterday: October 16, right in the middle of the "fall" release window Virgin PLAY planned for Europe. Unless AQ Interactive is planning a simultaneous worldwide release, we expect the late release will cause the European version to get bumped into next year. The U.S. version still has yet to be officially unveiled.

DSVision's virtual store lacks virtual goods (DS Fanboy)

According to Spencer over at Siliconera, the DSVision store isn't all it's cracked up to be. The launch of the service has left him wanting, considering there are only 30 items available in the online store, with users expecting much, much more from the launch of the service.

He does admit that the pricing is favorable, however. Episodes of television shows are only $2, with digital manga fetching $3 per chapter. The books on available on the service range from free for a trial to $6 for a 1,000-page novel.

Did any of you bother to import it?

DS Daily: FPS (DS Fanboy)

Filed under:

The latest footage of Renegade Kid's Moon convinced us (and IGN's Matt Casamassina) that the game could be something special, though a few of you evidently still need some encouragement. In the comments, reader John B. argued that no matter how much impressive technology Renegade Kid throws at Moon, it wouldn't be enough, because first-person shooters just don't work as well on the DS.

We're of the opinion that the handheld currently lacks a great FPS, but do you think the DS will ever see a triple-A game in this genre, given its obvious technical limitations?

DS Daily: Comparing remakes to new IPs (DS Fanboy)

Filed under:

If asked, most people would probably say that they'd prefer a new IP to a remake. Yet, it's when the remakes are announced that people get all riled up and the internet goes into a tizzy.

How do you feel about remakes? How old do you think a game has to be before it warrants such treatment? Where do you stand when it comes to new IPs versus remakes? And, most importantly, do you expect more than a port from a good remake?

Criterion working on Burnout Paradise planes (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

As in planes that can fly in the sky or planes that you can drive around on the ground? Seriously speaking, there was a vague mention up on Criterion Games' website giving hint to more vehicles ... of the winged and massive variety. Can Burnout Paradise's engine really dish out full flying machines? Maybe; considering all the previous updates and just the sheer amount of content that's added every time, we'd have to say we're going on good faith with this one. With Cagney soon to release this July 10, Burnout Paradise fans have a lot to look forward to.

On a side note, please pardon the photo. We just thought the Foo Fighters may have predicted this years ago. Have a peek at their lyrics: "Im looking to the sky to save me. Looking for a sign of life. Looking for something to help me burnout bright." See what we mean?

[Thanks Abdul A.S.!]

Crazy Taxi: Double Punch is crazy, out August in Japan (PSP Fanboy)

Filed under:

Does Crazy Taxi: Double Punch look familiar? It sure does. In fact, it looks just like Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars. Oh wait, it is Crazy Taxi: Fare Wars -- just with a different name for Japan. You know, to make the title feel like it's brand new and not some year-behind shelf-warmer. In any case, here's a zany Japanese trailer to keep you occupied. Crazy Taxi: Double Punch will be out in Japan this August 12.

Codemasters not planning on adding trophies to GRID (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

Codemasters is, sadly, the latest developer to be added to the list of those who won't be adding trophy support to their already released titles. On the official GRID forums an administrator has posted saying that they're "currently not planning to restrospectively support PSN trophies - it;s not a trivial thing to add to a game" [sic]. Though this is disappointing, it's not too unexpected. Third party games are the least likely to be patched in. With Criterion showing their contemporaries, hopefully more will decide to rake in the goodwill of gamers by following suit.

Chrono Trailer (DS Fanboy)

The countdown on the Japanese Chrono Trigger teaser site has elapsed. Now, the teaser site redirects to www.chronotrigger.jp, which loads up ... a new trailer for Chrono Trigger DS!

Featuring the original Akira Toriyama character art and footage of just one gameplay screen, this trailer could easily pass as a promotional video for the original Chrono Trigger if not for the "2008. Winter" tag at the end. The game looks identical in motion (unless that is Super Famicom footage). Of course, that will change when whatever is going on on the other screen is revealed.

After the video plays, a link comes up for an "About Chrono Trigger DS" page, which mostly states what we know (that Chrono Trigger is old, and that the DS version will differ in the fact that it uses two screens), but it mentions that the game (presumably in the Wireless Play mode) will support up to four players.

Capcom: No trophy support for Devil May Cry 4 (PS3 Fanboy)

Filed under:

A poster on Capcom Unity's forums has received an answer to the question of whether Devil May Cry 4 and Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo HD Remix will be getting the trophy treatment and it is no. Capcom feels that DMC4 already has "its own little trophylike system" and the Puzzle Fighter team has moved on to other projects.

There is a tiny bit of good news though, Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix may have trophies implemented, but it will depend on "what schedules look like and what Sony's requirements are." The only real good news is future games from Capcom will all have trophies, as it has "been worked into CEI's developer contracts as a required deliverable." Have other publishers signed such a contract?

This is rather disappointing, but after a string of such reports, we are not surprised. We are just really hoping SSF2T HD Remix will have support.

[Thanks, Jake C.!]

Burnout Paradise Cagney update not delayed for PS3 (PS3 Fanboy)

Have you heard the news that Burnout Paradise's update known as Cagney has been delayed? Fear not, PS3 fans! While we've become fairly accepting of delays and assume any game or update getting delayed is due to the PS3, this way of thinking is incorrect in this case. The PS3 update is still scheduled to go for July 10, but the 360 version has unfortunately been pushed back a few days. All is not sunshine and rainbows, though. Sony Korea has yet to approve the update, so until they do, this won't get released. It's still expected by July 10, but if not, we know which Sony headquarters to give the hairy eyeball.

Being a Wordmaster won't cost much (DS Fanboy)

Filed under:

It's not often that a game goes on sale before it's even released, not that we're complaining. If you enjoy word games, then, you might want to consider picking up Wordmaster at Amazon. Although the MSRP is $19.99, Amazon is currently offering the game for $13.99, which is as budget as it gets for a new release.

The title doesn't even come out until July 15th, but you can preorder now if you want to secure the game for cheap. As for what Wordmaster is? Well, think Lingo or Jotto, only on the DS.

On a side note, you can also pick up Petz: Hamsterz 2 as Amazon's "Deal of the Day" for $11.99. Um, woot?
